The state government is taking firm measures to support mango growers, Transport Minister and Chittoor Mandipalli district in-charge Ramprasad Reddy said on Monday.
The minister was discussing issues related to the mango pulp industry in a meeting held at the Collectorate chaired by District Collector Sumit Kumar. The meeting was attended by representatives of mango processing units, senior mango growers and officials of horticulture and allied departments.
Addressing farmers and representatives of the pulp industry, the minister said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has given top priority to address the concerns of mango farmers who have suffered losses due to a sharp fall in market prices following a bumper crop earlier this year.
To ensure that farmers do not bear the brunt of the fall in prices, the government announced a support price of ₹4 per kg and transferred ₹183 crore directly into the bank accounts of farmers in Annamayya, Tirupati and Chittoor districts. Of this, ₹146.84 crore has been deposited with 31,929 farmers in Chittoor district alone, the minister said.
Mr. Reddy said the government had also directed mango pulp units to pay farmers a minimum of ₹8 per kg and reminded the industry owners of their responsibility to protect the interests of growers. He added that the state is extending incentives, infrastructure support and electricity tariff assistance to support the growth of the manufacturing industry.
Collector Sumit Kumar said the pulp industry had purchased 2.40 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes during June and July. Prices increased in mid-July, benefiting several farmers, he said. He pointed out that several local industries were paying lower prices compared to those in Krishnagiri of Tamil Nadu and urged them to adapt to fair market practices. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between farmers and the pulp industry to ensure stability.
Representatives of the pulp industry said that rising import duties in European markets had adversely affected them. They called for a reduction in GST on mango pulp and suggested the creation of a Mango Board.
