Is ‘₹40 LPA’ enough to survive in Bengaluru? Internet Viral Question Answers | Today’s news
As the cost of living in India’s major cities continues to rise, social media users have been hit with a question about living in Bengaluru.
An X user named Shashi Sachan recently asked if he has a salary package ₹40,000,000 per year is still enough to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle in the city, or has increasing expenses made even that amount mediocre.
The post quickly gained traction and drew responses from professionals, families and long-time residents who shared their experiences of living and working in Bengaluru.
The question that started the debate
A user asked a simple but broadly related question.
“It’s a pay packet ₹40 LPA good enough to live comfortably in Bangalore? Or the city has become so expensive that even ₹40 LPA is the average now? If not, what do you think is the ideal annual package for a comfortable lifestyle in Bangalore today? ₹20 LPA? ₹40 LPA? ₹60 LPA? ₹1 million+? I’m curious to hear real experiences from people who live there.”
The post resonated with many as conversations about housing costs, school fees, transport, transportation and lifestyle expenses continue to shape perceptions of Bengaluru’s affordability.

Real estate emerges as a major interest
Several users pointed to housing as one of the biggest contributors to the city’s rising costs.
One user wrote: “Bangalore real estate was the real killer more than any other cost.”
The comment echoed a sentiment often echoed by residents who have seen rents and property prices skyrocket in recent years.
Others said the expenses can add up quickly, especially for families with children.

‘ ₹40 LPA is now way below average
One user broke down what he thought were typical expenses a family faces.
“40 is way below average these days…10 tax, 5-6 Lac Kids schooling, 5 Lac food/household expenses, 6 Lac rent in a below average flat. 5 Lac Travel, vacation etc. Total = 32L is what a common person spends these days.”
The comment suggested that after taxes and large household expenses, even a relatively high salary package may not leave much room for savings depending on lifestyle choices.
Not everyone agrees
However, not everyone shared this opinion ₹40 million a year is not enough.
One user argued that a much lower salary could still support a comfortable life.
“15 LPA is good enough. Only an elite club will get more than that. All the blue colored and service jobs won’t pay that much, but everyone lives happily on 50k, 1l salary per month!”

The response highlighted how perceptions of financial comfort can vary significantly depending on expectations and spending.
Family size makes a difference
Several users suggested that there is no single answer to the question.
One user summed it up by writing, “It depends. 2 kids and zero inheritance? 40 LPA is a living wage.”
Another user offered a breakdown by household size:
60 LPA for a family of 3.
