Despite describing the field as highly competitive, the 46-year-old has backed Sinner to retain his crown and believes former champion Rybakina has what it takes to top the women’s draw.“It’s such a tough question; the field is so open. But I have to go with defending champion Jannik Sinner in the men’s tournament. Among the women, I’d pick Elena Rybakina,” Bopanna told JioStar.Apart from sharing his predictions, Bopanna also opened up about his emotional connection with Wimbledon and said that the tournament has been a dream since childhood.“Wimbledon is a magical dream because that’s all I grew up with. We only watched Wimbledon at home. In fact, only Wimbledon is on TV. So it was absolutely amazing for me to go there and not only be there but also play on these courts,” Bopanna added.“I also played at a time when the three greatest tennis players of our generation, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, were competing against each other. To share the locker room with them and just be there was better than a dream.”This year’s tournament promises a lot of intrigue. Novak Djokovic is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title and eighth Wimbledon crown, while the likes of Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz and Jack Draper are among the contenders. The women’s competition also remains wide open after six different winners have emerged in the last six Grand Slams. Iga Swiatek returns as she hopes to become the first woman since Serena Williams to successfully defend her Wimbledon title, while Serena, who also received a wild card in the omens on her return to competitive tennis, and Venus Williams are set to meet again in the doubles.
