Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the 2025 Davis Cup final in Bologna after being diagnosed with a swollen right hamstring, an injury that worsened during the ATP Finals. Following medical advice, the world number one decided to step down, describing the decision as “heartbreaking” and stressing how much representing Spain meant to him.
His withdrawal leaves Spain without their leading man as they prepare for a quarter-final with the Czech Republic, a challenge that now looks much tougher.
Alcaraz’s setback comes at the end of a tough season in which he racked up tough matches and won major titles, including the US Open. Fatigue forced him to miss Davis Cup qualifying earlier in the year, and the latest injury underscores the physical toll on his program.
On withdrawing from the tournament, Alcaraz wrote: “I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna. I have edema in the sciatica of my right leg and medical advice is not to compete. I have always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was very excited to help fight for Salader’s heart.”
ALCARAZ FINISHES AS NO.1
Alcaraz nevertheless finished the 2025 season as the world number one at the end of the year lost the ATP Finals title match to Jannik Sinner in straight sets (7-6(4), 7-5). He already secured the top spot earlier in the week by beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1 to complete a flawless 3-0 run at the each-round stage, allowing him to move ahead of Sinner in the rankings.
At the end of the season, Alcaraz had amassed 12,050 points, putting him 550 points ahead of second-placed Sinner. And while Sinner won the final showdown in Turin, it was Alcaraz’s consistency throughout the year, highlighted by his Grand Slam successes and deep runs at major tournaments, that ensured he remained atop the ATP rankings and closed the season as the sport’s leading player.
