A council meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) is underway in Tirupati on Tuesday.
The Greater Tirupati region is set to emerge as a city in the ‘above 10 lakh population’ category with plans to expand its boundaries from the Kalyani dam in the west to the IIT-Tirupati campus in the east.
At the Tirupati Municipal Corporation Council (MCT) meeting held on Tuesday, Mayor BR Sireesha said the city will be expanded in an organic manner, keeping in mind the long-term growth needs of Tirupati and the preferences of the Panchayats proposed for merger.
Under the proposal, Tirupati will incorporate the Rayalacheruvu water reservoir in Ramachandrapuram mandal on the south side, a key source of water for the city’s growing suburbs.
“If important reservoirs like Kalyani, Rayalacheruvu and Mallimadugu dams do not fall within the city limits, the company may face problems in securing water supply, especially in summer,” she said.
With the Kalyani Dam on the Anantapur Expressway and IIT–Tirupati on the Venkatagiri Expressway marking the new western and eastern edges, the city will expand up to Anjeramma Kanuma ghat on the Chennai Expressway. This expansion will also bring a significant stretch of government land under the corporation’s jurisdiction.
Of the 53 villages proposed for merger, 10 Panchayats — Brahmanapattu, Kuntrapakam, Gandhipuram, Perumallapalle and Pudipatla (Tirupati Rural Mandal), Rayalapuram, Buchinaidupalle and Pichinaidupalle (Chandragiri mandal), Atthuru (Renipurm.Ramadal) mandal (Renipurm.Ramadal) have given their approval and their proposals have been submitted to the council.
The meeting was attended by MCT Commissioner Mourya Narapureddy, MP M. Gurumurthy, MLC Cipai Subramanyam and MLA Arani Srinivasulu.
