Telangana President Udhyamakarala Vedika Kurapati Venkata Narayana reiterated the demand to merge Hanamkonda and Warangal districts to form a combined district and develop the area under the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC), saying that the division of the erstwhile combined Warangal district into six districts has hindered development and caused social and political disunity.
Addressing a press conference in Hanamkonda on Sunday, former Kakatiya University (KU) professor Narayana condemned the previous BRS government’s decision to split the GWMC limits between the two districts, saying it had destroyed people’s confidence. He appealed to the ministers, MLAs, MPs and public representatives from erstwhile Warangal to take the initiative and merge the two districts ahead of the local body elections.
Expressing concern over the district’s development statistics, Mr. Narayana said the six districts carved out of the combined Warangal district were among the last 33 in the state. He asked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to focus on development of the district, including Kakatiya Mega Textile Park, Mamnoor Airport and IT industry, and to set up the Hyderabad-Warangal Industrial Corridor.
He also urged the central government to set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the district, which has already been set up in 22 states.
