Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a CPSU joint venture under the Ministry of Power, has signed an MoU for investment of ₹ 5,000 crore with the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), Industries and Tourism Department of Andhra Pradesh for a wide range of energy efficiency initiatives at the Supathamnam Partnership in Supathamna II.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu fully supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Panchamrit vision, terming it a historic mission vital for environmental protection, economic sustainability and long-term well-being of future generations.
He emphasized that broad public participation is essential to combat climate change and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the national targets announced by the Prime Minister at the Glasgow Climate Summit to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, meet 50% of energy needs through renewable sources, reduce carbon emissions by one billion tonnes and achieve 203 Net2070. AP has already taken steps to contribute nearly 160 GW to the national renewable energy target.
One important step is to partner with EESL to install and upgrade 10,000,000,000,000 LED street lights in urban areas and planning 7,000,000 new fixtures in rural areas over and above the 23,000,000 rural fixtures already installed. This will bring the state’s total footprint to 4 million LED street lights in less than two years.
An official report mentioned that switching to LEDs is expected to significantly reduce electricity consumption, peak power consumption and annual expenditure of urban local bodies and Gram Panchayats, while the longer lifespan and lower failure rate of LEDs will reduce maintenance costs. In addition, LED infrastructure would bring environmental benefits in the form of reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy consumption and sustainable public infrastructure.
EESL has also proposed the introduction of geothermal technology in Araku Valley for water heating, space heating and integrated clean energy solutions that can deliver 50-70% annual energy savings with a payback period of 4-5 years and a life cycle exceeding 15 years.
Ministers P. Narayana (MA&UD), Kondapalli Srinivas (MSMEs) and Kandula Durgesh (Tourism), Special CS. Ajay Jain, Principal Secretaries S. Suresh Kumar, N. Yuvaraj and K. Amrapali, EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit, CGM Animesh Mishra, GM Savitri Singh, National Advisor (Government Affairs and Media) A. Chandra Sekhar Reddy and others were present at the MoU signing.
