Delhi Capitals’ playoff hopes are in dire straits after an eight-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. A batting collapse against the KKR spinners coupled with a poor Net Run Rate pushed DC to the eighth position. They now need to win all three of their remaining matches to have any chance of qualifying, facing a must-win scenario in each of their upcoming games. Unless Delhi suddenly produce their most complete cricket of the season in the last three matches, IPL 2026 is fast heading towards an early end for Axar Patel’s side. Delhi Capitals’ playoff hopes suffered another major blow after a crushing eight-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders in Delhi. Finn Allen’s stunning unbeaten 47-ball century and KKR’s relentless spin choke completely derailed DC after a promising start. Pathum Nissanka’s brisk 50 briefly put Delhi in a strong position at 74/2, but Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy and Anukul Roy triggered a dramatic collapse in the middle overs as DC limped to 142/8. Chasing down the target with 34 balls to spare, KKR then handed Axar Patel’s side a crushing defeat that not only damaged their momentum but also worsened their already poor net run rate.
Delhi Capitals IPL 2026 Points Table
- Matches: 11
- Wins: 4
- Losses: 7
- Points: 8
- Net Operating Speed: -1.154
- Position: 8
Delhi Capitals have now slipped to the bottom half of the table with just three league matches remaining. Their qualification hopes are no longer fully in their own hands and a poor Net Run Rate leaves them vulnerable even if they manage to achieve a traditional qualifying mark. With many mid-table teams still in contention, DC are now locked in a battle for survival with virtually no room for further error.

IPL 2026 Play Off Qualifiers
- 14 points (7 wins): Minimum realistic limit
- 16 points (8 wins): Safe zone
The only major exception came in 2019 when Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified with 12 points – still the only time a team qualified with less than 14 points and a team that qualified despite having more losses than wins.In most seasons, 7 wins keeps you alive, 8 wins puts you in control.
What Delhi Capitals need from here
- Remaining matches: 3
- Current number of points: 8
- To reach 14 points: you need 3 wins from 3 matches
- Reach 16 points: No longer possible
Delhi Capitals have now entered must-win territory. Anything less than three straight wins will almost certainly knock them out of playoff contention. Even if they reach 14 points, their low Net Run Rate means they could still lose in tie-break scenarios against teams currently above them. The equation is now brutally simple: win it all and hope the other results fall favourably.
Spin issues and mid-order collapses hurt DC badly
The biggest problem for Delhi Capitals entering the final phase of the season is their inability to handle the constant spin pressure through the middle overs. This weakness was brutally exposed again against KKR. After reaching 74/2 in eight overs, DC completely lost control as Narine, Chakaravarthy and Anukul Roy pressed the scoring rate and forced errors. Between overs 9 and 14, Delhi managed just 18 runs for the loss of three wickets: a collapse that effectively decided the game. While the top order often provided decent starts, the middle order struggled badly once the opposition spinners settled in for long spells. Tristan Stubbs, Sameer Rizvi and Nitish Rana failed to consistently control the innings during pressure situations and left too much of the responsibility on the end bowlers late in the innings.Axar Patel’s dip in batting form has also added to DC’s woes. The skipper has not looked fluent in the middle Tests and Delhi’s inability to keep up the pace has repeatedly missed them in competitive totals.Their bowling also did not compensate. Mitchell Starc and Kuldeep Yadav produced isolated spells but DC lacked collective control, especially during the middle-order and at the death. This inconsistency has directly contributed to their disastrous Net Run Rate, currently the worst among teams still mathematically alive.
Upcoming IPL 2026 fixtures for Delhi Capitals
- May 11 vs. Punjab Kings (Dharamsala) – Tough away clash against the top two; the absolute necessity of winning.
- May 17 vs. Rajasthan Royals (Delhi) – A high-pressure home game against a direct play-off rival.
- May 24 vs Kolkata Knight Riders (Kolkata) – A potential elimination clash against in-form KKR.
DC’s IPL 2026 Playoff Qualifying Scenarios
- Win all 3 matches: Score 14 points and stay alive in a likely NRR dependent battle
- Win 2 matches: Finish with 12 points and you will likely be eliminated
- Win 1 match: Finish on 10 points and get eliminated
- Lose all 3 matches: Remain at 8 points and officially out
Delhi Capitals are still mathematically alive but their campaign hangs in the balance. Unlike several mid-table rivals, DC can no longer afford the luxury of managing scenarios sequentially, with every remaining game essentially a knockout. Their batting collapsing against spin, inconsistent bowling support and a poor Net Run Rate have all put them in a desperate position. Unless Delhi suddenly produce their most complete cricket of the season in the last three matches, IPL 2026 is fast heading towards an early end for Axar Patel’s side.
