Members of the Andhra Pradesh Bar Federation and Bezawada Bar Association (BBA) boycotted court duties on Monday to protest attacks on lawyers.
In October this year, thieves set fire to advocate P. Gowtham Reddy’s car in Vijayawada. The accused conducted a “survey” at Mr. Reddy’s house. In another incident, unidentified persons assaulted advocate A. Rajashekar in Tirupati recently, BBA president AK Basha said.
Though a complaint was lodged with the police at the NTR Commissionerate, no case was registered, claimed Mr. Gowtham Reddy.
Later, the advocates organized a rally from the court complex to the police commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) ABT Udaya Rani. Mr. Basha appealed to the police to immediately arrest the accused and provide protection to the defense counsel. Proponents of the attacks condemned and abstained from court duties in Krishna, West Godavari and Chittoor districts.
