Clear edges, sharp LBWs: Afghanistan miss 3 dismissals vs. India in Mullanpur
A horror two-minute spell in the forenoon on Day 2 saw Afghanistan slip further in the one-off Test against India in Mullanpur. Poor decision-making and terrible use of the Decision Review System (DRS) saw the visitors fail to dismiss Indian skipper Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant early on Sunday.
Afghanistan, who had already let KL Rahul out on Saturday by failing to check the outside edge, repeated their mistakes against Gill and Pant. The incident occurred in the 89th over of the match when Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a spirited spell with the new ball.
IND vs AFG Live Updates: One-off Test Day 2
Azmat, who maintained excellent line and length throughout the Test, trapped Gill plumb in front of the stumps. The entire Afghan side went up in unison, but the umpire wasn’t convinced enough to raise his finger. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi looked at goalkeeper Asfar Zazai, who looked unconvinced himself.
The problem may have been that the ball hit Gill’s pad twice – it glanced off the front and hit the back. This may have led the Afghans to wonder if Gill had tripped the ball into his pads.
However, the DRS recording showed that Gill was lead in front, with the ball hitting top middle and leg stump. Gill, who had already scored a Test century, survived as he batted on 108.
The birth was finally recorded as a goodbye.
On the very next ball, Azmat went around the goal and created an exceptional shootout for Pant. The wicket batsman, probing the outside off stump, appeared to fire the ball through to the keeper. Afghanistan again appealed in unison and were again denied a wicket.
However, Afghanistan inexplicably chose not to revise.
As the footage was shown on a giant screen, Afghanistan batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz was seen expressing his frustration and asking why his captain and wicketkeeper did not opt for a review.
However, the release did not hurt Afghanistan too much. A spirited spell from Saleem Safi saw Shubman back just now, with the skipper returning to the dugout after 126 runs. Safi also dismissed Dhruv Jurel with a stunning set-piece as he saw the batter arm his way into a delivery that hit the top of his off-stump.
Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, lost his patience and skied down a delivery from Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi. Pant fell short of his hundred and was dismissed for 81 runs.
At lunch on Day 2, India are still in a strong position having scored 475 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
