The district administration in each of Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai districts is gearing up to handle the southwest monsoon that is expected to set in in neighboring Kerala.
A review meeting chaired by the Collector concerned was held in these districts to ascertain the preparedness of various ministries including Revenue, Health, Tangedca, Water Resources Department (WRD), Rural Development and Police before the South West Monsoon. “Precautionary measures have been taken at identified waterlogged and low-lying places. Adequate stocks of wood cutters, sandbags, snake catchers, ropes and aids have also been prepared for emergency purposes,” said K. Ravikumar, Collector (Tirupattur).
Revenue officials said the pre-monsoon summer showers ensured significant widespread rain in these districts, especially in areas around Jawadhu Hills such as Jolarpet, Yelagiri Hills in Tirupattur, Amirthi Zoo (Vellore), Polur and Jamunamarathooor in Tiruvannamalai.
Water levels in many ponds, streams and lakes in these districts are slowly rising due to the rain. The groundwater level is also constantly increasing. It helped farmers to irrigate their farmland.
District officials, especially WRD officials, have been directed to check the closures and barriers of irrigation tanks and canals in the district. Ties should be reinforced if found to be weak or damaged. Shutters are repaired and serviced.
All machinery such as earthmoving machinery required for rescue and relief operations were also available in vulnerable areas. Community centers and wedding halls have been renovated with new plumbing and proper ventilation to function as relief camps for displaced persons. Field workers have been advised to remain alert for rain-related complaints from residents.
