Candidates of the United Democratic Students’ Front (UDSF), a coalition of the Kerala Students’ Union and the Muslim Students’ Federation, have submitted a petition to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Calicut, seeking steps for a peaceful conduct of the Students’ Union (DSU) elections in the capital campus.
The election, which took place earlier this month, was annulled by the Vice-Chancellor following allegations of errors in the electoral process. The authorities have now decided to conduct the surveys on October 31 based on the High Court’s order. In the petition, the UDSF candidates alleged that neither the police nor the authorities took any action against the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists who “unleashed violence” when the elections were held earlier. UDSF activists were also threatened by police and SFÚ officials, they claimed. The UDSF candidates urged the chancellor to direct the police to register cases against the actual perpetrators of the violence and said fresh elections should be held only after peace is restored in the campus.
