Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty came under heavy criticism after taking a kicking Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur as she defended against allegations of mistreatment of junior players. In an interview with Daily Cricket, Joty referred to India’s 2025 World Cup-winning captain and rejected allegations of beating up young cricketers.
Earlier, in an interview with journalist Riasad Azim, veteran pacer Jahanara Alam accused Joty of plotting her removal from the national team and misbehaving with junior players in the Bangladesh team. However, Joty completely denied the allegations, saying that she never hit any junior in the team.
“Why would I hit somebody? I mean, why would I hit the stumps with my bat? I’m Harmanpreet, I’d go around hitting the stumps like that? Why would I do that? In my personal space, when I’m cooking or something, I might bang my bat, I might hit my helmet – that’s my thing.”
“But why would I do something like that to someone else? Why should I go physical? Just because someone says so? You can ask other players or anyone else if I’ve ever done something like that,” Joty said.
UNNECESSARY AND CLASSY
Meanwhile, fans were unhappy with Joty’s comment about Harmanpreet, who recently became the first Indian women’s captain to win an ICC title.
One fan wrote: “Not so dear – Nigar Sultana Joty, not everyone can be Harmanpreet Kaur, you have to win the WORLD CUP for that! you have to qualify for that!”
Another fan mentioned, “Nigar Sultana stumbles to new lows everyday. You can’t control other people’s accusations but you always control your statements. Extremely useless and classless pop in Harmanpreet Kaur.”
Joty’s reference to Harmanpreet dates back to India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh in 2023. In the third ODI of the series, Harmanpreet smashed the stumps with her bat in frustration after being given an LBW.
She later described the referee as “pathetic” during the post-match presentation and was also accused of taunting the Bangladeshi players during the trophy photo session.
While Harmanpreet went on to finish the 2025 World Cup as a champion, Joty endured a bumpy campaign. Bangladesh opened with a win against Pakistan but failed to record another victory despite narrowly edging out South Africa, England and Sri Lanka.
