All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was not available for selection in the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday, October 25. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the 22-year-old sustained a left quadriceps injury during the second ODI in Adelaide on Thursday.
India had to sacrifice batting depth as they did replaced Nitish with Kuldeep Yadav for the series decider. India also replaced Arshdeep Singh with Prasidh Krishna.
Nitish Reddy has suffered a number of injury setbacks in his nascent international career. Earlier this year, he returned home halfway through the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after sustaining a serious knee injury during a gym session ahead of the fourth Test at Lord’s in London.
AUS vs IND, 3rd ODI: Update
The all-rounder recovered in time to play in the home Test series against the West Indies and was subsequently included in the white-ball tour of Australia in the absence of Hardik Pandya, who remains sidelined with an injury sustained during the Asia Cup.
Nitish made his One-Day International debut in the series opener in Perth and also played the second ODI in Adelaide. However, there have now been doubts over his availability for the upcoming T20I series, following his latest injury scare.
BCCI said: “Nitish Kumar Reddy sustained a left quadriceps injury during the second ODI in Adelaide and was subsequently unavailable for selection for the third ODI. The BCCI medical team is monitoring him daily.”
Nitish’s trial with injuries started shortly after his first season in IPL 2023. However, the Visakhapatnam-born all-rounder recovered well and made a big impact in IPL 2024, playing 13 matches for SunRisers Hyderabad, scoring 303 runs and taking two wickets.
After the IPL, Nitish was selected for India’s tour of Zimbabwe but missed the flight due to a sports hernia. He recovered in time to make his international debut in the T20I series against Bangladesh before joining the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where he made his Test debut in Australia.
The Indian team management and selectors see Nitish as a future all-rounder in all formats, but the youngster has been unlucky with injuries. The BCCI will continue to monitor his workload closely, given how demanding it has become for fast bowling all-rounders in modern cricket.
It now remains to be seen whether Nitish can recover in time to feature in the T20I series starting on October 28.
