The state government has directed the Adilabad District Collector to acquire 700 acres of land for the development of a joint-user airport in the district headquarters town.
The initiative is aimed at fulfilling the long-cherished dream of the people of Adilabad district and its adjoining areas to connect passengers in air transport, official sources said.
As part of its ambitious plans to initiate the development of six regional airports in Telangana, the state government has appointed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as a consultant to provide consultancy services for the preparation of Techno-Economic Feasibility Reports (TEFRs) for the proposed six airports.
Consequently, TEFRs have been submitted to AAI indicating feasibility with respect to Adilabad district subject to certain clearances. Official sources said the Indian Air Force (IAF) has already agreed in principle to the state government’s proposal to operate civil aircraft from Adilabad airport in April this year.
It may be mentioned that the old airstrip of IAF is located on the outskirts of Adilabad city. The IAF has proposed that the said airport could be developed as a joint-user airport, with AAI acquiring contiguous land for a civilian terminal and other necessary infrastructure, the defense ministry said in a communication dated April 1, 2025.
