The Glazer family, who own Manchester United, are considering selling their stake in the club
The Glazer family’s long association with Manchester United could be headed for a major turnaround, with Bloomberg reporting that some members are considering selling their stakes in the club. According to people familiar with the matter, there have been discussions among various interested parties in the family about the possibility of offloading some or all of their ownership. The news prompted a positive market reaction, with Manchester United shares up 7 percent in after-hours trading.
While the initial talks reportedly revolved around paying off individual family members, there is now an effort to build wider support within the family for a larger scale sale. The talks come more than two years after INEOS founder Jim Ratcliffe acquired an almost 29 per cent stake in the club. Although the Glazers retained majority control, the deal handed Ratcliffe authority over football operations at Old Trafford.
The Glazers and Manchester United declined to comment on the matter, according to Reuters.
Since completing his investment, Ratcliffe has overseen several changes aimed at improving the club’s assetsincluding cost-cutting measures, job cuts and ticket price increases.
The Glazers, meanwhile, remained a divisive presence among fans. Fans have often criticized the family for the club’s level of debt, questionable spending decisions in the transfer market and a perceived lack of investment in infrastructure.
Manchester United’s fortunes on the pitch have improved under Michael Carrick this season, with the club finishing third in the Premier League to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League after missing out on the previous two campaigns. Manchester United shares closed at $21.11 on Wednesday, valuing the club at around $3.64 billion, according to LSEG data.
United fans will be hoping that the club’s momentum continues on and off the pitch and in terms of transfers. They are close to signing Brazilian midfielder Ederson and have seen Rasmus Hojlund leave the club permanently for Napoli.
