Buoyed by the success of the ‘Pink Bus’ in the state, the Bihar Transport Department has decided to run 50 more pink buses to ensure safe and smooth travel for women in the state.
The department currently operates 100 pink buses in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya Ji, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga and Purnea.
“The ministry has decided to run 50 more pink buses in major cities of the state. These buses are run for women to ensure their safe and smooth travel,” Transport Minister Damodar Rawat told reporters at a press conference in Patna on Wednesday (June 3, 2026).
Mr. Rawat was accompanied by Transport Department Secretary Raj Kumar and State Transport Commissioner Arif Ahsan.
The department is providing employment opportunities to women after imparting training to 100 women drivers, he said, adding that women aspirants who want to join as drivers will be given training in LMV (Light Motor Vehicles) and HMV (Heavy Motor Vehicles).
The pink buses are equipped with CCTV cameras, emergency button and GPS to ensure continuous monitoring of the buses plying on various roads.
Keeping the transport system in the state modern and convenient, the ministry has also decided to develop 31 modern bus stands on the lines of NOIDA and Mumbai bus stands under PPP mode, the minister said, adding that among the proposed bus stands are Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya Ji, Bhagalpur, Purnea, Darbhanga, Kishanganj, Motihari, Biharsharif, Biharsharif.
These bus stands will be equipped with modern facilities so that passengers can travel safely and comfortably, Rawat said, adding that these stands will have modern waiting rooms, digital information system, clean drinking water, toilets, parking, canteens, passenger assistance center and security, among others.
To ensure road safety, better traffic management and electronic enforcement system, the ministry has taken an initiative to implement Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) under PPP model in the state, said Transport Ministry Secretary Raj Kumar.
This project will further enhance technological traffic monitoring, e-challan system and data-driven decision-making, he said, adding that ITMS will be installed at 500 locations across the state, out of which 200 locations will be installed in the first phase, while the rest will be installed in the second phase.
A command and control center will be established in Patna, and viewing centers will be established in all 38 districts of the state, which will ensure effective monitoring of traffic violations, analysis and their centralized enforcement.
The secretary said the department is preparing to strictly monitor school buses through “software” that is being developed. There are directions issued by the Supreme Court which are not followed. All buses operated by schools will be registered, he added.
Mr. Kumar said the department is developing a ‘where is my bus’ software that will let people know about the location of the bus and also when the bus is expected to reach its destination. It will be implemented over the next one and a half months, he added.
