Bengaluru man protests traffic stop for governor while pregnant wife waits, netizens criticize VIP culture; probe ordered | Today’s news
A man from Bengaluru on Sunday staged a protest demonstration on Old Airport Road alleging that his pregnant wife was stuck in their vehicle due to a traffic stop for a VIP movement. A video of the incident went viral on social media.
According to social media claims, traffic on Old Airport Road was stopped to allow the governor’s convoy to pass.
In the viral video, a visibly disturbed commuter was seen sitting on the road in front of police personnel. When officers intervened, he allegedly refused to move, saying his pregnant wife was in the car and required immediate medical attention.
He also questioned why VIP movements are prioritized over public emergencies.
The video was filmed by passers-by and other commuters, prompting sharp criticism online.
Here’s how netizens reacted:
Social media users criticized the VIP culture on the city’s already congested roads, raising fears of inconvenience to the public.
“Old Airport Road is already choked with an underpass. Traffic was completely stopped for nearly 30 minutes today due to the governor’s movement. A man carrying his pregnant wife got stuck in traffic. When will public convenience matter as much as VIP convenience?” said the user who uploaded the video.
Sharing a video, IT veteran TV Mohandas Pai criticized the VIP culture and tagged Karnataka CM candidate DK Shivakumar, urging him to review the traffic stop for VIP movements and alleged that the police was stopping traffic for longer than necessary.
“Governor, please look at how people are suffering because of the excessive security of your cavalcade. Please step in and order them to reduce these grossly excessive shutdowns. We respect you and deserve the full respect of our governor,” he wrote.
Another user said: “Humanity should come first, not the VIP movement. VIP and political meetings can be conducted online to avoid traffic, crowds, accidents and public nuisance. Emergency vehicles and pregnant women should always be the first priority on the roads.”
“Kudos to the man. Govt should arrange communication skills training for all the cops who talked to him and treated him so rudely. People are more important than VIPs chosen by people,” said another user.
Probe on
An investigation was launched on Monday, according to news agency PTI, citing police.
A senior traffic police officer told PTI that an investigation has already been started in the matter and facts are being verified on the basis of which appropriate action will be taken.
