Who is IPS Sumit Jha? Why is CJP in news amid protests? Here is what the Delhi Police wrote to X | Today’s news
IPS officer Sumit Jha became a recurring figure on social media during the student protests against the NEET exam in June-July and later in October when the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) called for large-scale demonstrations in Delhi against Chief Minister Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
A “fake” video showing Jha announcing his resignation as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Delhi Police during the protests was circulated by many on social media.
However, the Delhi Police dispelled these rumors in July. She fact-checked the video and clarified on July 28, “The viral video claiming that DCP Sumit Jha has resigned due to student protests is completely fake and created by AI.”
Original vs fake video
In the original video posted on July 23, Sumit Jha appealed to “students and youth to be vigilant against such foreign accounts that spread rumors to mislead the situation”.
He said in a video message that “480 Pakistani social networks involved in coordinated disinformation campaigns have been identified and blocked.”
This video of Jha, posted on July 23 by Delhi Police’s X Division, has been altered using AI to show Jha announcing his resignation from the Delhi Police during the protest. In the fabricated video, he was seen saying: “I was pressured to lie about the student protests. I’m not going to lie anymore, so I’m resigning.”
On 28 July, the Delhi Police reviewed the video and dismissed it as fake.
Why is IPS Sumit Jha in news now?
The viral post reportedly resurfaced during the CJP protest in October. The misleading content was uploaded on Facebook, Instagram and X, prompting the police to take up the matter with the platforms, officials told news agency PTI.
According to the report, a post by a man named Sayed Chaudhary claimed that Jha, a staff officer at the Delhi Police Commissionerate, had resigned.
Delhi Police has now written to social media platform X over misleading posts by a man claiming that IPS officer Sumit Jha had resigned amid CJP protests, officials told news agency PTI on Wednesday.
