TDP allies back 34% reservation for BC, says Palla Srinivasa Rao
TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao said discussions are on with NDA alliance partners on seat sharing for the upcoming local body elections, but a broad understanding has been reached and all have committed to offer 34% reservation for Backward Classes (BC).
However, the category-wise selection of candidates could be done only after the Supreme Court decides on the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the state, he noted.
In a press release, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that a clear picture of the BC quota is likely to emerge in the next two to three days and expressed hope that the outcome would be positive, noting that the High Court verdict was disappointing.
He accused the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) of adopting double standards on BC reservations. It (YSRCP) tried to appease the BC on one hand and approached the courts against the proposed reservation on the other. The TDP, on its part, pursued all legal avenues to achieve the goal.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party will field candidates who have a good understanding of local conditions and who are closely connected with the people.
For the first time in its 44-year journey, the TDP has given a significant share of nominated posts to partners as part of a political consensus reached before the elections. The party leadership recognizes the contribution of its local workers and accords them due priority in nominated posts based on merit, competence and selfless service, the state TDP chief added.
