Asian Games 2026 Medal Tally: Historic Hockey, Boxing, Wrestling and Archery Move India to Top 5

(Photo by Reuters) NEW DELHI: India moved into the top five medal winners at the 2026 Asian Games after a stunning day of gold medals across sports.India now have 16 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze medals, taking their total to 76 medals. They are currently fifth in the ranking behind China, Japan, South Korea and Uzbekistan.China continues to lead the medal table with 162 gold, 81 silver and 73 bronze medals, for a total of 316 medals. Japan is second with 71 gold, 83 silver and 85 bronze, while South Korea is third with 33 gold, 39 silver and 62 bronze.Uzbekistan is fourth with 20 gold, 23 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Historic hockey gold after 44 years

The Indian women’s hockey team produced one of the biggest moments of the Games when they beat defending champions China 1-0 in the final on Friday. The win gave India its first gold medal in women’s hockey at the Asian Games in 44 years. It also secured a direct start to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Lalremsiami scored the all-important goal in the 10th minute with a superb tomahawk strike. India then defended their lead brilliantly to retain the gold.

Sujeet produces a stunning wrestling comeback

Sujeet Kalkal added another gold for India in the men’s 65kg category after a dramatic final. The Indian wrestler defeated Abdulmazhid Kudiev of Tajikistan 10-9 after trailing 2-9 at one stage. Kudiev made a strong start and prevented Sujeet from attacking in the opening period with his arm locks. But once Sujeet understood his opponent’s style, he used his speed and technical ability to turn the match around.He scored eight points in a row and completed the comeback with a decisive takedown with about 20 seconds left.Sujeet then maintained his one point lead to win the gold.

Box brings a golden hat trick

Indian boxers also enjoyed the memorable day, winning three gold medals.Lovlina Borgohain won the women’s 75kg title while Parveen Hooda secured gold in the 65kg category. Ankush Panghal completed the hat-trick with a gold in the men’s 80kg category.These three victories gave a big boost to Indian boxing and added three more gold medals to India’s tally.

Female archers defeated the world champions

The Indian women’s recurve team also created history by winning their first gold medal at the Asian Games. Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod beat the world champions South Korea 5-3 in the final.The final was played in windy weather, the first two sets were tied. Both teams scored 54 points in the first set and 56 in the second before India pulled away to secure the gold.
