Tawang Tourism Mart: Why India’s Choice in Arunachal After 13 Years Matters Against China’s Territorial Claim | Today’s news
The Union Government is organizing the annual International Tourism Fair at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh from October 27 to November 1. Delegates from around 20 countries, including China, are expected to attend.
The 14th year of the flagship event to support tourism is jointly organized by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the Department of Tourism of the Government Arunachal Pradesh.

The event brings together tourism businesses, government representatives, tour operators, investors, media and other stakeholders to showcase tourism potential Northeast region.
The 2025 edition was held in Gangtok, Sikkim from 13 to 16 November and was attended by government representatives and industry stakeholders from over 19 countries.
Why does Tawang matter?
This year’s event marks a return International Tourism Mart to Tawang after more than ten years. The district last hosted the event in 2013.
While the tourist market is a routine annual event, its choice of location is important. Tawang lies in the eastern sector of the India-China border and has long been at the center of Beijing’s territorial claims to Arunachal Pradesh.
China refers to Arunachal Pradesh as Zangnan, or Southern Tibet, and claims the territory as part of China. India rejects this claim, saying that Arunachal Pradesh is “an inalienable and integral part of India”.
Sometimes tension along Line of true control (LAC) flare up as well. One such notable case was in 2022 when a physical clash was reported between Indian and Chinese troops in an area called the Yangtse, in the upper Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.
Tawang is known for its 400-year-old monastery, Buddhist heritage, association with the 6th Dalai Lama, Himalayan landscape, high mountain passes and Monpa culture.
China has repeatedly published standard Mandarin names for places in Arunachal Pradesh, prompting sharp diplomatic rebuttals from India.

The tourism event in Tawang also comes weeks after the government identified 27 places and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh using standard names on official Survey of India maps, saying the move was aimed at their “accurate recognition and better awareness among the general public”.
China and the tourist market
The participation of Chinese delegates at the Tawang event could draw attention to the long-standing territorial dispute between India and China. Government representatives from China have not participated in the tourism market in India in recent years, although Chinese private tour operators have participated in previous years.

The 2018 International Tourism Mart in Agartala was attended by more than 60 travel agency delegates from various countries, including representatives from China.
For this year’s edition, invitations have been sent to around 20 participating countries and industry delegations, with official confirmation still pending, according to an Indian Express report.
Officials in a press release from the Arunachal Pradesh government said the Tawang event will provide a platform to showcase the district’s Himalayan landscape, Buddhist heritage, Monpa culture, adventure tourism and eco-tourism attractions to domestic and international stakeholders.
Tourist pressure on the northeast
The Ministry of Tourism has been organizing international tourism events since 2013. The goal of the annual fair is to promote the region as a tourist destination for domestic and foreign visitors.

While the tourist market is a routine annual event, its choice of location is important.
It brings together tourism businesses and entrepreneurs from eight northeastern states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim – for interactions between buyers, sellers, media, government agencies and other stakeholders.
The Tawang edition is expected to attract government officials, tour operators, investors, tourism representatives and media personnel from India and abroad as the government seeks to promote tourism, investment and sustainable economic development in the region.
