Monsoon begins to withdraw from northwest India | Today’s news
New Delhi: The southwest monsoon has withdrawn further from parts of northwest India, marking the beginning of the annual retreat of the four-month rainy season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
Monsoon withdrew further from other areas of Rajasthan and also from parts of Haryana and Punjab on 21 September. The weather office said conditions are favorable for its further withdrawal from remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh and Delhi, other parts of Rajasthan and parts of Saurashtra & Kutch, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh during the next 2-3 days.
The withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon usually starts from West Rajasthan in September before gradually progressing over Northwest and Central India and subsequently moving towards the Southern Peninsula and Eastern regions. However, the download speed depends on the prevailing rainfall and atmospheric conditions.
Developments are closely watched by policymakers and agricultural markets as the southwest monsoon contributes about 70% of India’s annual rainfall and plays a key role in farm output, reservoir levels and rural economic activity.
The southwest monsoon has so far brought a cumulative rainfall of 703.7 mm during June 1 to September 21, which is 15% below the normal of 827.2 mm.
Wet weather will continue in many states
Meanwhile, several parts of central and eastern India are likely to witness widespread rainfall in the coming week, while parts of northern India, including Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, are also expected to experience increased rain activity.
In northwest India, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand during 22-25 September, followed by fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on 26-27 September, Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh likely to experience isolated to scattered rain during 24-27 September. Uttar Pradesh is expected to see increased rainfall activity later this week. Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi are likely to experience isolated to scattered rainfall on September 26-27.
Central India, West Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall during September 22-27. Rainfall is expected to intensify over East Madhya Pradesh, with moderate to widespread rain forecast during September 23-27. Vidarbha is likely to experience widespread rainfall during September 22-27, while Chhattisgarh is expected to receive moderate to widespread rainfall during September 22-27.
East India is likely to remain wet. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Jharkhand and Odisha during September 22-27, while Gangetic West Bengal is likely to experience such rainfall during September 22-27.
In the southern peninsula, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahé and northern interior Karnataka during the period from September 22 to 25. Telangana is likely to experience widespread rainfall during September 22-26, while south interior Karnataka is expected to experience such rainfall during September 22-24.
