Harsh Goenka reacts as Delhi man trades ancestral gold to buy iPhone 18 Pro for wife | Today’s news
The frenzy surrounding the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro in India has drawn the usual massive crowds to Apple stores, but one shopper in Noida has sparked a debate on social media over its unconventional financing method.
A Delhi man waiting outside the Apple Store at DLF Mall of India told India Today Tech that he sold his ancestral gold to buy the newly launched device in the coveted burgundy color for his wife.
The revelation quickly went viral and caught the attention of industrialist Harsh Goen, who shared the video on X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on shifting financial priorities.
“Some people sell gold to buy a house. Some sell it for their children’s future. This Delhi man sold the family gold passed down from his grandmother and great-grandmother to buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max for his wife,” Goenka wrote.
Social networks are responding
The post sparked a sharp online divide, pitting personal choice against basic financial prudence.
Several users criticized the decision as a display of “wrong values”, pointing to the poor economics of disposing of a historically appreciating asset like gold for a rapidly depreciating piece of technology that will inevitably need to be replaced.
Others took a more sarcastic stance, joking that the buyer could at least claim to be performing a public service by putting dormant gold back into circulation in the economy.

And we’ve not only made incremental improvements in those areas—we’ve taken giant leaps forward to create the best iPhone Pro we’ve ever made,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing.
The vice president continued, “iPhone 18 Pro makes it easier for everyone to take stunning photos and videos with variable aperture, while providing more versatility for creators and more control for professionals. Coupled with impressive upgrades to photo styles and powerful video capabilities, iPhone 18 Pro unlocks whole new ways for users to express themselves.”
