Palakkad DMO warns of spread of H1N1

The District Medical Officer (DMO) has warned the public to remain vigilant against H1N1, a respiratory disease that spreads rapidly through the air due to the influenza A virus.

High fever, chills, sore throat, cough, runny nose, body ache, headache and severe fatigue are its main symptoms.

The DMO said the infection is spread when the patient coughs or sneezes and the virus remains in the air, or when a person touches objects used by the patient and then touches the eyes or nose.

The illness usually resolves within a few days, but those experiencing breathing difficulties and chest pains should seek immediate treatment at the nearest hospital.

Bedridden patients, people with serious illnesses, pregnant women and children under two should consult a doctor if they have fever or other symptoms, the DMO said.

If such high-risk persons are at home, other family members with symptoms should strictly avoid close contact with them, the DMO said.

Pregnant women are more susceptible to infection because immunity is low during pregnancy. Fever can quickly turn into serious lung conditions such as pneumonia and can lead to miscarriage and premature birth. Therefore, increased caution is necessary, the policeman added.

People with symptoms should drink plenty of water, rest, and not self-medicate or take antibiotics without a doctor’s advice. People should cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, wash their hands frequently with soap or use hand sanitizer, and avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. They should wash their hands well after coming home from outside.

Persons with symptoms should avoid public places and unnecessary hospital visits. In unavoidable situations and in crowded places, they should wear a mask and maintain social distance. People should keep a safe distance from those with fever and cough and seek proper treatment immediately instead of self-medicating, the DMO said.
