No Hardik Pandya, Auqib Nabi picked in Indian ODI squad for West Indies series
Rookie all-rounder Naman Dhir and pacer Auqib Nabi have earned their first call-ups to the Indian ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against the West Indies. India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies, with the ODI series starting in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27.**
Hardik Pandya has not been included in India’s ODI squad despite his expected return to competitive cricket later this month. The all-rounder has already been selected for India A’s three-match one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry starting on October 6 and September 20 is slated to be his return to competitive cricket.
However, the timing means that Pandya will not be available for the West Indies ODIs, which begin on September 27. The selection committee will also have to assess whether he is ready to bowl 10 overs on his return and face straight 50 overs in an international game.
Pandya’s absence leaves India short of all-round bowling machines in the ODI setup. Nitish Kumar Reddy, the second option in the role, will be in Japan with the Indian contingent for the Asian Games during the West Indies series.
Suryansh Shedge and Venkatesh Iyer, who could also be considered as alternatives, are currently struggling with injuries.
The selectors subsequently handed the first ODI call-ups to Naman Dhir and Auqib Nabi. Dhir has emerged as a promising all-rounder while Nabi’s inclusion adds another bowling option to the team.
Shubman Gill will continue to lead the ODI side, with KL Rahul named as his deputy. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both been included in the squad while Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal are also playing.
Ravindra Jadeja remains the senior spin-bowling all-rounder, with Kuldeep Yadav providing a wrist option in the front line. The pace attack includes Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and first order call-up Auqib Nabi.
Team India ODI vs West Indies: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul (vice-captain), Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Mohammed Na Siraj, Yahir.**, Jawalvi Jabis
