The Congress government in the state is neglecting its basic responsibilities in the name of funding guarantees, BJP MP Jagadish Shettar said on Monday.

Mr. Shettar, who is a former chief minister, said he was extremely upset over the state government’s withholding of funds amounting to several crores of rupees to the suppliers who supply food to the social welfare department hostels.

“The Congress government owes a total of ₹370 crore to a total of 1,939 student hostels in the state. They include pre-maternity and post-maternity hostels. These charges, including student food expenses, building rent and maintenance charges, have been outstanding for more than 18 months,” the MP said.

“Such hostels in Belagavi district alone owe over ₹29 crore dues to the Congress government. The Congress government is playing with the future of students by delaying grants. Poor parents admit that their wards hope to get a good education and settle down in life. But the state government has not been able to provide even the basic amenities,” he said, urging all the pending state governments to come to terms.
