Monsoon will remain active across India till September 15 | Today’s news

Monsoon activity is likely to remain widespread over several parts of India till September 15, with rainfall expected to intensify over parts of northwestern, central and western India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Isolated to scattered showers are likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the week in northwest India. Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and East Uttar Pradesh are likely to witness scattered showers during September 10-15.

Rain activity is expected to intensify over the hills, with fairly widespread to widespread rain forecast over Himachal Pradesh on 14-15. September and Uttarakhand during 11-14 September.

Central India is likely to see a gradual increase in rainfall. Fairly widespread to widespread rains are forecast over western Madhya Pradesh during 12th-15th. September, in eastern Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha during 11–14 September and in Chhattisgarh during 10-15 September. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

In eastern India, moderate to widespread rainfall is expected over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during 10-15 September. Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha are likely to experience widespread rains during September 10-12, while Bihar may experience similar conditions on September 10.

Western India is expected to remain wet, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall forecast over Konkan and Goa during 10-15. September. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to see widespread rains during 12-14. September, while Gujarat could see widespread rains during 12-14 September.

In south peninsular India, scattered rainfall is likely over Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu till September 15. Kerala and Mahe are expected to experience fairly widespread to extensive rains during 10-12. September while Telangana is likely to experience similar rainfall during 11-12. September. Lakshadweep is expected to receive heavy rainfall during September 10-11.

Widespread rain activity is likely to keep several regions in wet conditions over the next week.

According to IMD data, India received 645.5 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 8, which is 14% below the normal of 754.5 mm.

The southwest monsoon accounts for more than 70% of India’s annual rainfall, while about 45% of the country’s net sown area remains rainfed. A good monsoon supports rural demand, while poor rainfall weighs on consumption.

Meanwhile, parts of northeast and east India received heavy to very heavy rainfall during the 24 hours that ended at 8:30 am on Wednesday, with Tripura receiving the heaviest showers, according to the IMD.
