A truck driver sustained minor injuries after a vehicle carrying straw caught fire on contact with a live overhead cable in Ladavaram village on Wednesday.

Police said the driver, S. Ravi, 46, a native of Walajah, managed to jump down from the vehicle before the driver’s cabin caught fire. The truck was transporting straw from Vellore to Tirupattur. When the truck reached the government school in the village, the straw touched a low-lying live wire, which started the fire.

The villagers who noticed this alerted the driver about the fire. The residents alerted the fire and rescue services from Arcot, who extinguished the flames. They battled for almost an hour to bring the fire under control.

The truck was not completely gutted as straw bales were thrown from the vehicle. A case has been registered by Arcot Taluk police and investigation is on.
