Bristy Mukherjee, the 28-year-old niece of former West Bengal chief Mamata Banerjee, was reportedly found in Birbhum in Rampurhat on Tuesday. According to news agency PTI, Mukherjee was found hanged at her residence in the village.

Bristy Mukherjee was among 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff who lost their jobs following an investigation into teacher recruitment for alleged “illegal” recruitment. Mukherjee was posted as a non-teaching staff member at Bolpur’s Upper Primary School.
Bristy Mukherjee’s name reportedly appeared at the 608th position in the list of candidates who were thrown out following the High Court’s order, which was also upheld by the Supreme Court.
According to a report in The Telegraph, Bristy Mukherjee was depressed after the court’s verdict in the alleged teacher recruitment scam case. The family says she received treatment for it.
A native of Kusumba village in Birbhum, Mukherjee’s father Nihar Mukherjee is Mamata Banerjee’s maternal cousin. He is also a local leader of the Trinamool Congress.
The body was sent for an autopsy. An investigation is underway to shed light on her death. The authority said. “The circumstances leading to the death will be determined after the post-mortem and other procedural investigations,” PTI quoted him as saying.
