(PTI) Stand-in Captain MS Dhoni will be led by Chennai Super Kings against the Kalkata Knight Riders Ajinkya Rahane (KKR) in match 25 Indian Premier League (IPL) at Ma Chidambaram in Chennai. CSK are currently placed ninth, while the KRKR in the sixth position on the point table.
On the eve of the match, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming revealed that Ruturai Gaikwad from the tournament was excluded.
MRI confirmed that Gaikwad, 28, has a fracture of the elbows, Fleming said, adding that Dhoni would take over as a captain for the rest of the IPL.
“Unfortunately, Ruturaj Gaikwad will be expelled from the tournament,” Fleming said. “(Gaikwad) was hit in Guwahati. He worked with a lot of pain.”
Dhoni, 43, led Chennai from 2008 to 2024 when he handed over Captain Gaikwad.
In 2022 he also handed over Captain Ravindr Jadeja, but after a series of disappointed results he took the lead in the middle of the season. Under Dhoni, CSK won five IPL titles, the last in 2023, as well as the two Champions League trophies. However, the team had a starting start in the current season and lost four of its first five games.
On the other hand, the KKR will be clever of their close loss against Lucknow Super Giants three days back and will try to return to the winning ways before it is too late for champion defenders.
