Wangchuk taken to hospital on HC orders, says Delhi Police; Dipke claims he was “beaten up”, detained | Today’s news
The Delhi Police claimed that Sonam Wangchuk was taken to the hospital on Saturday morning “on the orders of the Hon’ble High Court and on the advice of a medical expert”, adding that officials had adopted “maximum restraint” during the process.
They also asked the protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to vacate the premises as soon as possible.
In a post by X from DCP New Delhi’s social media, the authorities said: “As per order of Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advice due to deteriorating health condition of Sonam Wangchuk, he was shifted to hospital for basic medical treatment…Police maintained maximum restraint and conducted the exercise safely. We request the protesters at Jantar Mantar to leave peacefully as soon as possible.”
Dipke contradicts the police statement
However, Abhijit Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janata Party at the head of the movement, contradicted the police statement.
Dipke claimed on social media that the Delhi Police had “interfered” with the Jantar Mantar. He also claimed that people who had gathered there were beaten and that Sonam Wangchuk was “forcibly” taken away.
“Delhi Police is cracking down on Jantar Mantar. Beating up people and forcefully taking Sonam away sir,” Dipke said in a post on X.
“I was beaten and detained by the Delhi Police,” Dipke said in another X post.
Saurav Das, one of the spokespersons of the CJP, shared the video and said, “Delhi Police stopped Abhijeet Dipke where he was staying. People are telling me that Sonam Wangchuk is being picked up from the protest site. Students are being harassed!”
The move came a day after Delhi got its new police commissioner, senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar, who previously served as special director of the intelligence agency.
He was appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
