As the new excise duty regime kicks in in the state from Monday, the prices of various brands of liquor are still being revised. While some prices of some brands were available on Monday, some others were added on Tuesday. Tax officials hope to complete the process in the coming days.
According to excise officials, the entry level of low-priced, high-alcohol drinks has increased by between ₹10 and ₹20 per 180 ml. The hike, estimated at around 20%, will not affect excise duty collection much, excise officials say, adding that despite the increase, cheap high-alcohol drinks in Karnataka continue to be the cheapest among the south Indian states.
On the other hand, the premium liquor segment is expected to see a price drop of up to ₹ 700 per 750 ml bottle. “Expensive imported whiskey will see a bigger decline compared to IML. Overall, all premium segment liquors will cost less,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Federation of Karnataka Wine Merchants Association said its members were unable to increase stocks even on Tuesday as the new rates of many brands/labels are still not available. The member said they were unable to pick up the stock until late Tuesday evening.
Tax officials attributed the delay to manufacturers who have yet to provide the price list and alcohol content of the drink (pure alcohol content in a bottle). Excise tax and additional excise tax are calculated automatically without manual intervention after entering two data.
Asked if there was any shortage in retail stores, federation sources said retailers had stocked up well in advance of the new excise duty regime. “Most retailers increased inventories in April, leading to the highest sales in April in recent years. Basically, it was due to profit-seeking,” the official said.
