Bangladesh cricket icon Shakib Al Hasan criticized the caretaker government for keeping the national team out of the recent T20 World Cup in India. The all-rounder, widely regarded as the country’s greatest cricketer, termed the move as a major setback for fans and the sport.
Why did Bangladesh miss out on T20 World Cup?
The caretaker government under Muhammad Yunus stopped the team from traveling to India for the February-March 2026 ICC event. The decision followed the BCCI’s directive to Kolkata Knight Riders to drop Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad. Scotland stepped in as their replacement, leaving Bangladeshi fans heartbroken.
What did Shakib Al Hasan say about the decision?
The former captain shared his candid thoughts on the sidelines of the Belgium 2026 EU T20 opener in Mumbai on Wednesday.
“I think it was a mistake on the part of the government that they decided not to participate in this World Cup,” Shakib told reporters. “I think it was a big loss. A big mistake as far as Bangladesh cricket is concerned. Because we as a country love to watch our players play in the World Cup. They play matches. We are a cricket-loving country. And a country like Bangladesh not participating in the World Cup was such a big mistake.”
How has the Bangladeshi political scene changed?
The provisional phase is over. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) swept the general election in a landslide and now rules the country. The new management offered olive branches to India, raising hopes of smoother cricketing relations between the neighbours.
Will Shakib Al Hasan play farewell test?
At the age of 39, Shakib boasts a scintillating Test record of 4,609 runs and 246 wickets in 71 matches. Two seasons ago, he planned to bow out at home to South Africa. But under the Yunus regime, as a former Awami League lawmaker, a court in Dhaka issued an arrest warrant against him.
With the political shift, fans are optimistic that he can return for an emotional home farewell. When asked about his plans, Shakib kept it simple but positive.
“We will see that later,” said the former ICC Cricketer of the Year. “But yeah, I think things will get better sooner or later. Everything will heal in time. So hopefully I’ll get what I want.”
What role will Tamim Iqbal play as interim head of BCB?
Former teammate Tamim Iqbal now heads the Bangladesh Cricket Board on an interim basis. He has already hinted at warmer relations with the BCCI. Many believe this could pave the way for Shakib’s wish to come true and help restore strong bilateral cricket ties.
