On election day, efforts to make the electoral process more inclusive gained momentum as institutions and organizations working in the mental health sector made it easier for people with mental illness to vote.
At the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), 53 residents who improved with treatment cast their votes at booth number 251AV set up in the Ayanavaram campus. Initially, 100 of them were assessed and found eligible to vote. The number was revised to 53 after doctors in some units re-examined the residents and found them unable to vote, while several residents were discharged from the institution, according to IMH director M. Malaiappan.
