Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook, both former England captains, are at odds again, this time over Jacob Bethell’s decision to stay in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Pietersen hit back after Cook questioned the youngster’s choice to stay in India despite not getting game time.
The debate revolves around Bethell’s tenure with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he is yet to feature in IPL 2026. While Cook has urged him to return to county cricket, Pietersen has argued that the IPL environment offers unparalleled learning, even from the sidelines.
Pietersen, who has long championed the value of franchise-based cricket, did not hold back in his reaction on social media.
“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO NEED to be in the IPL,” Pietersen wrote on X.
“What it’s like to always be among the best players in the world. So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India Jacob. I know even when you’re not playing, you’re learning and you’ll be a much better player,” he added.
WHAT DID COOK SAY AT BETHELL?
Cook expressed concern about Bethell’s lack of game time, suggesting that regular cricket in England would be more beneficial to his development. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, the former England captain questioned the value of staying in the IPL without playing.
“He should be playing county cricket again rather than sitting on his *** at the IPL doing nothing,” Cook said.
HOW BETHELL DEFENDED HIS IPL POSITION
However, Bethell stands by his decision to stay with RCB and highlights the benefits of the IPL environment. Speaking on the Sky Cricket podcast, the youngster explained how the experience has already helped him grow as a player.
“I feel better now than I did a month ago after the World Cup because of being around the local lads and the sheer standard of cricket in India and the IPL. It’s something not many people understand how great it is until they’re actually in the team or the tournament itself when you’re here,” Bethell said.
“It just has a completely different feel to it. It feels like everyone is subconsciously almost raising their game without knowing it because of the caliber of the tournament,” he added.
WHY BETHELL DOTADA DIDN’T PLAY IN IPL 2026?
Despite his rising reputation, it was difficult for Bethell to break into the RCB playing XI due to strong competition in the team.
With overseas slots limited and the likes of Tim David and Romario Shepherd at the top of the order, along with an established Indian core, opportunities have been rare.
Still, Bethell’s recent performances for England, including a standout Ashes century and a strong T20 World Cup showing, have cemented his place as one of the country’s brightest young prospects. Meanwhile, while Cook emphasizes match time, Pietersen believes the IPL experience itself is shaping Bethell’s growth.
