FIFA has put more tickets on sale for the 2026 World Cup after growing opposition to newly introduced premium price categories. The move comes after fans raised concerns about transparency and availability, with many questioning how tickets were allocated.
The governing body has confirmed that more tickets will be released for all 104 matches, including categories 1, 2 and 3, along with the newly added “front-tier” tier. The decision follows criticism from supporters who argued that the better seats were previously denied and later reintroduced at significantly higher prices.
The extent of the price increase was the main point of discussion:
- Starting ticket prices ranged from $140 (category 3, first rounds)
- The final tickets were first valued at $8,680
- Prices later went up to $10,990 for the finale
- USA vs Paraguay tickets initially ranged from $1,120 to $2,735
- New “front row” seats for the same match now cost up to $4,105
- Category 2 “front” tickets priced between $1,940 and $2,330
Concerns were also raised about seat allocation. Several fans claimed their previously purchased tickets were reassigned to less favorable sections, fueling accusations of a “bait and switch” approach. FIFA has not publicly addressed the claims.
The problem was further compounded by reports of slow ticket sales for some matches, including the United States’ opener against Paraguay in Inglewood. Despite being a marquee fixture, a significant number of seats remain unsold, highlighting the impact of rising prices.
The World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, is already being planned as the most commercially extensive edition of the tournament. However, the latest development has raised concerns that it is becoming increasingly inaccessible to fans.
WHY FANS CHOOSE WORLD CUP 2026 TICKET PRICES
Fan frustration has largely centered around the sudden introduction of higher price tiers and the lack of communication around these changes. Many supporters have taken to social media to question why the premium seats appear to have been reclassified and later sold at inflated prices.
Some have also pointed out discrepancies in seat categories at different matches, suggesting that sections originally sold below the lower tiers were later moved to more expensive brackets. Others claimed that the seat maps changed after purchase, giving them a worse view.
In particular, the introduction of “top tier” tickets, which are priced significantly higher than existing tiers, has drawn criticism, with fans claiming the process lacks transparency and fairness.
WILL THE NEW 2026 WC TICKETS BE GOOD FOR HIM?
While FIFA’s decision to release more tickets could improve availability, it remains unclear whether it will address the main concerns raised by fans. High prices continue to be a major obstacle, especially for early round matches where demand is usually more price sensitive.
The additional costs associated with participating in the tournament have also come under scrutiny. For example, transportation services such as the Boston Stadium Express, a price of around Rs 8,840.90 for a round trip has added to concerns about overall affordability.
With the tournament expanding to 48 teams and becoming a global celebration of football, the current ticketing situation presents a challenge. If the issues of pricing and transparency are not resolved, FIFA risks alienating some of its fans at a time when inclusivity is expected to be at the heart of the World Cup experience.
