US rapper Eminem has completed 18 years of sobriety, marking the milestone with a social media post that highlighted his long road to recovery. On April 20, the 53-year-old musician shared a photo on Instagram of himself holding a sobriety commemorative coin.
The coin featured inscriptions along the outer edge including “to thine own self be true” and “unity, service, recovery” surrounding a triangle. The number 18 was engraved in the center in Roman numerals. The rapper captioned the image simply “XVIII🏅”.
Fans congratulated the rapper on his journey.
The user wrote: “I’m proud of you bro.”
Another user commented: “I’m so happy for you and the man you are.”
A third wrote on Instagram: “So awesome! Greatest ever! Hands down!”
The rapper, known for chart-topping tracks such as Lose Yourself and Without Me, has previously spoken about his struggles with substance addiction. According to People, during the height of his addiction, he consumed large amounts of prescription drugs and alcohol, including Vicodin, Ambien and Valium.
After an initial rehab in 2005, Eminem experienced a relapse after being given unidentified pills that he later learned contained methadone. In an interview with VIBE magazine in 2009, he said his doctor informed him that the amount of methadone he consumed was equivalent to taking multiple doses of heroin.
The incident led to a near-fatal overdose in 2007, after which the rapper regained consciousness in hospital. Reflecting on the episode in the 2025 documentary STANS, Eminem described the moment as a turning point.
He said he came home after the overdose and felt an urgent need to change. He also recalled waking up in hospital disoriented, attached to medical equipment and unable to move, describing it as a moment that underlined the severity of his condition.
After the overdose, Eminem committed to sobriety and began to rebuild his life and career. During this period, he worked on his 2009 album Relapse, which marked his return to music after a hiatus.
On a 2022 episode of Paul Pod, the rapper talked about the early days of recovery and described a renewed sense of clarity and happiness after the substances were out of his system. He noted that recording Relapse was the first time in years that he truly enjoyed the creative process.
Eminem’s 18-year sobriety milestone has been widely noted among fans, with the commemorative coin symbolizing his continued commitment to recovery. The rapper often uses his personal experiences to inform his music, and his journey through addiction and sobriety remains a significant part of his public narrative.
