TN Govt. allows for increased intake in arts and science faculties
The Tamil Nadu government has allowed an increase in the intake of students in government, aided and private arts and science colleges in the state.
A government order (GO) issued on Thursday said that in the academic year 2026-2027, government arts and science colleges will be allowed to admit 20 percent more students in high-demand courses. For science subjects, the increased income will be conditioned by good laboratory equipment of the respective institutions.
Similarly, state-aided colleges can admit 15 percent more students to arts and science courses that are in high demand and, in the case of science subjects, have appropriate laboratory facilities. However, stand-alone courses conducted by aided schools will be allowed an additional income of 10 per cent.
For self-financing Arts and Science colleges, the additional income allowed was 10 percent.
The increase will be based on the original income approved by the university to which the institutions are affiliated, the ÚV clarified. Institutions should also seek approval from their respective universities before admitting additional students. Institutions, however, were not allowed to seek sanction for additional seats in view of the increased student intake.
The GO also said in the academic year 2025-26, the government has given similar permission for further admission of students in government, aided and self-financing arts and science colleges.
