Delhi Capitals cricketer accused of having sex under false promise of marriage
Abhishek Porel of the Delhi Capitals (AP photo) Bengal and Delhi Capitals batting wicketkeeper Abishek Porel has found himself at the center of a controversy after a woman filed a police complaint accusing him of maintaining a physical relationship with her under the promise of marriage and later refusing to fulfill the commitment. The complaint also includes allegations of assault and intimidation.The complaint was lodged by the woman and her mother at the Mogra police station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Tuesday. Police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the allegations.According to the complaint, the woman claimed that she and Porel had been in a relationship for the past three years. She claimed that problems started appearing between them last year, after which the cricketer gradually started distancing himself from her.The complainant further alleged that Porel had assured her that he would marry her, but now he has reneged on that promise. She also accused the 23-year-old cricketer of having sexual relations with her under the promise of marriage.In addition to these allegations, the woman claimed she was subjected to assault and intimidation.“We have received a complaint and have started an investigation,” a police official told PTI.Porel strongly denied the accusation. The wicketkeeper, who is currently in Bengaluru, described the allegations as baseless and suggested that the timing of the complaint was related to his recent success on the cricket field.“I’m playing well now, so different things are coming,” Porel told the media.The Bengal cricketer also said that he will provide a detailed response once the authorities complete the preliminary stages of their investigation.“I will talk about it when the police investigate. I haven’t spoken to the police yet,” he said.Porel has been part of the Delhi Capitals set-up in the Indian Premier League since 2023. During the last IPL season, the left-handed batsman scored 108 runs from four innings for the franchise.He made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021–22 domestic season and has since appeared in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A matches. Porel has also previously traveled with the India A squads on tours to the United Kingdom and Australia.The investigation into the allegations remains ongoing.
