General Education and Labor Minister V Sivankutty has written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw seeking adequate compensation and employment for a 19-year-old teenager who sustained serious injuries after being kicked from a moving express train earlier this month.
Ms. Sreekutty was alighted from the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Kerala Express by an allegedly drunk passenger shortly after the train left Varkala station two weeks ago.
Mr. Sivankutty, who brought the disturbing incident to the notice of the Union Minister, said that Ms. Sreekutty remained under treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital here. All her medical expenses were covered by the state government.
The young woman and her family were left in a “state of deep physical, emotional and financial crisis” following the incident, which took place under the jurisdiction of the Indian Railways.
Considering the gravity of the incident, the Railways should immediately take measures to support Ms. Sreekutty, the minister wrote, seeking adequate financial compensation to ensure her long-term care and rehabilitation and support her family.
He also sought permanent employment for the survivor with the railways or with an associated public sector undertaking, commensurate with her qualifications, to secure his future.
The minister highlighted the lack of passenger security and called for strengthening security protocols, especially for women passengers, and increased patrolling to ensure that similar incidents do not recur across the rail network.
“Safety of Indian Railways passengers is paramount. Providing robust and immediate support to victims like Ms. Sreekutty is a matter of moral and institutional responsibility,” Mr. Sivankutty wrote, hoping for a favorable response.
Mr. Sivankutty met Ms. Sreekutty’s mother at the hospital on Monday. He also asked doctors about her state of health.
He was accompanied by MLAs V. Joy and Kadakampally Surendran and CPI(M) district secretariat members S. Pushpalatha and Sunil Kumar.
