Days after the Supreme Court ordered the preservation and renovation of Mysuru’s iconic Devaraja Market and the Lansdowne Building, Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar on Monday visited the century-old Devaraja Market and interacted with traders.
The visit follows the verdict of the Supreme Court of May 4, 2026, which orders the restoration of two heritage buildings. Merchants and tenants opposed the demolition and reconstruction, demanding the restoration of the market building, referring to its historical value and architectural significance. The Lansdowne building remained off-limits to traders for several years after part of the structure collapsed.
Describing the judgment as a landmark decision earlier, Mr. Yaduveer said the Supreme Court had ordered the conservation and renovation of the 19th century buildings.
He said the verdict was based on a detailed engineering assessment conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee, which reportedly found that nearly 70% of the structures could be repaired and restored while maintaining the existing foundation.
In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Mr. Yaduveer urged the state government to immediately release the approved funds as per the recommendations of expert committees from IIT, Roorkee and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). He also sought directions to Mysuru City Corporation and Mysuru Development Authority to start the restoration work at the earliest.
