(AP photo) Bosnia and Herzegovina captain Edin Džeko made FIFA World Cup history despite his side facing an uphill battle against the United States in the round of 32, becoming the oldest player in the field ever to start a men’s World Cup knockout match. At 40 years and 106 days, the veteran striker surpassed all previous outfielders to appear in the knockout rounds to become the first outfielder aged 40 and over to appear in World Cup knockout matches. However, this milestone may turn out to be one of the shortest in the history of the tournament. If Luka Modric (40 years, 296 days) starts for Croatia or Cristiano Ronaldo (41 years, 147 days) is named in Portugal’s starting XI for their respective Round of 32 matches in Vancouver, either veteran would eclipse Džeko’s record less than 24 hours later. But the historic evening took a painful turn early in the second half.Five minutes after the restart, Bosnia briefly had the ball out of play after Džeko fell to the ground clutching his leg after what appeared to be a non-contact injury. The inspirational skipper was unable to continue and was substituted, bringing an unfortunate end to his milestone. The United States lead 1-0 thanks to Folarin Balogun’s strike in first-half stoppage time. The forward reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area to score his third goal of the tournament to give the home side a vital advantage heading into the closing stages. The game took another dramatic turn from then when Balogun was shown a straight red card after VAR review, reducing the United States to 10 men for the final half hour of regulation time. The ban has given Bosnia new hope as they seek an equalizer against a side now focused on protecting their slender lead.Regardless of the final result, Džeko’s performance has already secured his place in the World Cup record books – although that feat could be surpassed within a day if Modric or Ronaldo start for their nations.
