Chief Minister VD Satheesan said work on the proposed Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplantation in Kozhikode would be completed in 30 months.

He was speaking after launching the silver jubilee celebrations of Kerala Heart Care Society here on Saturday (October 3). Mr. Satheesan said that ₹271 crore has been earmarked for the institute, which is coming up on a 20-acre site in Chevayur. All services related to organ transplantation would be consolidated under one roof to reduce the cost of surgery by one third. The facility would have 350 beds and 10 operating theatres. A skin hospital was also designed in the same premises. An amount of ₹35 crore would be spent on the hospital, Mr. Satheesan said.

The institute would be promoted as a center of excellence with a research program attached to it. Up to 1100 corneal transplants, 520 kidney transplants, 50 heart transplants, 40 lung transplants, 120 bone marrow transplants, 320 liver transplants, 15 bowel transplants, 15 pancreas transplants and 320 soft tissue transplants would take place there in a year. Mr. Satheesan said that taking advantage of the state’s climate and other advantages, Keralam would turn into a medical destination where foreigners and locals could turn for treatment. Wellness centers, rehabilitation centers and facilities providing medical care for stroke would be put into operation. A large-scale campaign for the prevention and early detection of diseases will soon be launched. Among others present were K. Praveenkumar and K. Jayanth, MLA and K. Kunjali, President of the Society.

The foundation stone of the proposed institute was laid by former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in February this year. However, after the change of government, work on the facility started at a slow pace.
