The announcement of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad came as a big surprise when Shubman Gill was omitted from the 15-man squad. However, the selection committee was quick to point out that the call was not a reflection of Gill’s ability.
In a press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the reasons behind the move, stressing that team balance rather than form or caliber dictated the selection.
“There is no doubt about Shubman’s quality. He may not have scored as many runs recently, but that doesn’t change how highly we rate him. He was also unlucky to miss the last World Cup when we opted for a different combination. Again, it’s more about team balance – specifically the idea of having two wicketkeepers at the top – than individual ability,” Agarkar said.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
– The end
