In a bid to curb the spread of ringworm, a highly infectious disease affecting equines, the Bengaluru district administration has enforced strict restrictions around the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC).
Bengaluru Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DC) G. Jagadeesh on Thursday issued a preventive order banning the movement of horses, donkeys and mules within a two kilometer radius of the Turf Club after finding out about the confirmed cases. The measures were put in place to prevent further transmission of the disease and to protect both animal welfare and public health in the city, the order said.
Two horses placed in BTC tested positive for this disease.
Citing the seriousness of the outbreak, the district commissioner said the Bangalore Turf Club has been officially notified as the epicenter of the infection under the provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Communicable Diseases Act.
Mr Jagadeesha, who also serves as the chairman of the district Livestock Disease Control Committee, said that “in view of the contagious nature of Glanders, immediate steps were required to contain the contagion”.
According to the order, the movement of equines for all purposes including recreational activities, religious ceremonies, public processions and other events is strictly prohibited in the notified zone until further instructions.
Mr Jagadeesha said Glanders was spreading rapidly among equids and posed a serious risk if not controlled.
Meanwhile, BTC has decided to cancel the remaining races of the ongoing Bangalore Winter Meeting 2025-26.
