Who is Vivek Ramaswamy? Indian-American Could Be Third Richest US Elected Official With $2.3 Billion Net Worth | Today’s news
Indian-born Vivek Ramaswamy, who is running in the US election on November 3, could become the country’s third-richest politician if elected. According to Forbes, the Republican candidate running for governor in Ohio has an estimated net worth of $2.2 billion. The 41-year-old is competing against Democratic candidate Amy Acton and Liberal candidate Don Kissick to become Ohio’s 71st governor.
If elected, Ramaswamy would become the first Indian-American governor of Ohio and the second richest governor in the US, Forbes reported.
Only US President Donald Trump, whose net worth is estimated at $7 billion, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, whose net worth is estimated at around $4.2 billion, would surpass him.
What are the main sources of wealth of Vivek Ramaswamy?
The main source of Ramaswamy’s wealth is Roivant Sciences, a biopharmaceutical and healthcare company he founded in 2014. The company’s stock has performed well in 2025 after brepocitinib, its autoimmune disease drug candidate, reported encouraging results in Phase 3 clinical trials.
Despite the rising share price, Roivant Ramaswamy is selling parts of his stake in the company. According to estimates by Forbes, over the past year Roivant has raised around $1.2 billion from the sale of shares.
That includes $106 million worth of stock sold in November and December of last year, followed by about $400 million in the first quarter of 2026. Based on a similar pace of sales in the next two quarters, Forbes estimates it could have sold another $700 million in the past six months.
In addition to Roivant, Ramaswamy also owns an estimated $130 million stake in Chapter, a company that helps people navigate Medicare services. He quietly co-founded the company in 2020 while leading Roivant. Chapter raised $100 million this year at a $3 billion valuation, double its valuation a year earlier.
Who is Vivek Ramaswamy?
The son of immigrants from Kerala, Ramaswamy was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He rose to prominence during the 2024 US presidential election after he withdrew his candidacy and endorsed US President Donald Trump. After Trump’s election victory, he was chosen to co-head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with Elon Musk, but later left the initiative to pursue his political ambitions.
In its October 29 report on Ramaswamy’s campaign and the role of bias in the election, The Washington Post noted that he had never held elected office or worked in Ohio state government. He also emphasized how he spoke about his Catholic education and his family’s immigrant roots during the campaign.
Ramaswamy announced his bid for governor of Ohio in February 2025 and won the Republican nomination in May 2026. He is now competing to replace Republican Governor Mike DeWine, who cannot seek another term due to term limits. His Democratic rival, Acton, previously served as director of the Ohio Department of Public Health, CBS News reported in May while covering the state’s Republican primary.
