Who is Subhadeep Ghosh, the former Assam cricketer who will join the coaching staff under Gambhir?

As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to reshape the Indian men’s cricket team under Gautam Gambhir, the focus has firmly turned to the fielding department. After the decision not to renew T Dilip’s contractthe board is set to integrate veteran specialist Subhadeep Ghosh into the senior national coaching set-up, sources told India Today.

The move comes at a time of increasing scrutiny of India’s performance in the field. While Dilip’s tenure under Rahul Dravid won praise for introducing eye-catching dressing room traditions, particularly for ppopular “Impact Fielder” medal, the reality on the pitch proved less flattering. A series of high-profile lapses in catching, misjudgments in the field and drops in the cordon, particularly in the recent T20I tour of the UK, have forced the management to rethink their technical approach. Since Gambhir was keen on instilling absolute accountability and athletic discipline, the coaching leadership required a hands-on technical strategist.

Enter Subhadeep Ghosh. He has been in the system for the last six to seven years since Rahul Dravid’s time at the National Cricket Academy, now the Center for Excellence.

Affectionately known as Joy in domestic cricket circles, the 57-year-old hails from Digboi in Assam. Between the 1994/95 and 2004/05 seasons, Ghosh represented Assam and Railways as a reliable right-handed middle-order batsman and bowler. In 17 Grade One appearances and 17 List A appearances, he established a reputation as one of the most agile and responsive riders on his home circuit, a natural athleticism that defined his eventual transition to elite coaching.

Ghosh is no stranger to elite circles. Over the past decade and a half, he has established himself as a major component of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) coaching pool in Bengaluru. His IPL experience includes a successful stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders during their title-winning campaign in 2014, followed by a stint as the fielding coach for the Delhi Capitals.

Apart from franchise cricket, Ghosh served as the fielding coach for the Indian Women’s National Team during their multi-format tour of Australia in 2021. He has also regularly conducted fitness blocks for the India A and India U-19 teams, including their 2024 World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Known for his methodical drill structures, relentless ground field repetition and focus on reaction times, Ghosh brings a direct technical focus aimed at eliminating unnecessary errors in the field as India prepares for upcoming international assignments.
