Who is Jahnvi Singh? IIM Calcutta graduate left McKinsey to join Google, here’s why, explains the difference | Today’s news

Everyone wants to do an MBA and secure a job in a top consulting firm. But Jahnvi Singh, an MBA graduate from IIM Calcutta, has gone viral on social media for quitting McKinsey. In the video, she opened up about her decision and revealed why she decided to join Google instead.

A year after transitioning from a management consultancy to the tech giant, Singh shared her experience working at both companies. She explained the differences in the two work profiles, travel, benefits and work-life balance.

On Instagram, Singh introduced herself as a former McKinsey consultant. She called it her dream job and explained how her experience changed her everyday life.

Who is Jahnvi Singh?

Jahnvi Singh is an MBA graduate from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata. She previously worked at McKinsey, one of the world’s leading management consulting firms, and later moved to Google as part of the Gurugram team.

He is also a social media content creator. He often writes about his career, life, trips and the like.

Why did she leave McKinsey and join Google?

Speaking about leaving McKinsey, Jahnvi Singh explained the difference in the nature of the work.

At McKinsey, she said she worked with multiple clients and handled a variety of deals across industries. She recognized that it offers diversity and exposure to different businesses and industries.

But at Google, her work was focused on a single business. She said it allows her to develop a deeper knowledge of an industry. The downside is that working in the same business can sometimes feel monotonous.

The shift suggests a compromise between consulting and corporate roles. While consulting offers exposure to different clients and projects, an in-house position provides continuity and better knowledge of the business.

What changed after joining Google?

Singh said her consulting role came with frequent domestic travel to cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi.

“McKinsey meant a lot of domestic travel. I was constantly traveling between Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi,” she said.

Although domestic travel has been reduced at Google, he now has the opportunity to travel abroad for work two to three times a year.

About work-life balance

Singh also analyzed the workplace benefits at both companies.

While McKinsey offered perks such as five-star hotel stays, dinners and parties during consulting assignments, she said Google provided facilities such as office pick-up and drop-off services and a canteen with healthy food.

The biggest change, however, was her life outside of work.

“At Google, I exercise regularly five times a week. I take 8,000 steps a day and on most weekdays I can make plans with friends without anyone else’s permission,” she said.
