Western disturbances bring rain across northern India; monsoon set to advance | Today’s news
New Delhi: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the fC is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall over the western Himalayan region and parts of northwest India between June 18 and 22.
The Meteorological Department also said that conditions remain favorable for the Southwest Monsoon to advance further into East and Central India in the coming days.
In its latest forecast, the IMD said isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on June 17. Similar rain activity is likely over Himachal Pradesh on 17 June and again during 19–22 June. June, while Uttarakhand can during 17-22 isolated to scattered precipitation can be recorded in June.
Parts of Northwest India including East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and West Rajasthan are also likely to witness isolated scattered rain during June 17-22. In Uttar Pradesh, such rainfall is expected in western districts between June 17-19 and again on June 22, while eastern parts of the state may receive rain on June 17-18 and June 21-22.
Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to advance to other parts of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh during the next four to five days.
The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, three days later than the usual onset date of June 1. It has since covered Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, most of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar, as well as the entire northeastern region.
The IMD said heatwave conditions are expected to persist over parts of central and eastern India. Isolated areas of Chhattisgarh are likely to experience heat waves till June 17, Telangana till June 18 and Vidarbha till June 19. Similar conditions are forecast over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on 18-19. June and over western Uttar Pradesh from June 19 to 22.
Temperature trends are expected to remain mixed across the country. Maximum temperatures over central India are likely to remain almost unchanged till June 19 before decreasing by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Maharashtra could see temperatures rise by around 2°C in the coming days before a similar drop, while no significant change is expected elsewhere.
